Nat Turner : Not Your Typical Slave Objectives: 1)Defend your reason weather Nat Turner was overall helpful or harmful to the Southampton region. 2)Describe at least one of the visions that Nat had.
Answers to objectives: 1) In my opinion, Nat was harmful to Southampton. Although he rebelled with a great amount of courage and influenced other slaves to join him in his rebellion, whites eventually heard about his terrible plan and how he had killed over 50 people along with 6 other men. As time went by, whites ended up catching him sending him to trial to be executed. Nat was then hung and skinned in the early 1830’s. Also, even blacks that did not take part in the riot were murdered by white mobs and close to 200 blacks died. As a conclusion the legislature of Virginia considered abolishing slavery, but because of a vote they retained it instead.
2) Nat’s three visions were: 1- Nat first ran away from his overseer at the age of 21 due to a spirit that told him to return to the service of his earthly master. 2- In another vision he saw lights in the sky and prayed to find out what they meant. 3- Heard a loud noise in the heavens and God laid down the yoke he had borne for the sins of men. He then fought against the serpent for the first time and then the last were first.
This is a picture of Nat Turner when he was captured while continuing to kill whites. He then was sentenced to trial to be executed and eventually hung.
